Tom Waits' Swordfishtrombones by David Smay
I read this book
over 10 years ago, but for whatever reason, it was not showing up as read in my
kindle library. I decided to re-read this one since it is short and about one
of my favorite Tom Waits albums. Rain Dogs is probably my favorite, but I like that
this one is the album before and it really shows how Waits moved from the
singer songwriter to someone more experimental and daring in his musical voice.
While I remembered some of the stories about the album, the song writing, and
the photo shoot, I forgot what a great writer Smay is. His reporting is
enjoyable, and he frequently develops a humorous voice in his writing. I’m glad
that I re-read this book. It was as entertaining and enlightening as I
remembered.
