The Aosawa Murders by Riku Onda was ok. It kept coming up as recommended and the story sounded interesting. I always like reading Japanese mysteries. Parts of the story were interesting. I liked the framing of the story within a true crime book. I also thought that the Rashomon style perspective taking provided an interesting perspective to consider what happened in the house on the day of the murders. It’s also interesting to read about a mass poisoning murder and all of the possible ways that it may have unfolded. I also think that with so many different characters and perspectives in the book, the writer (and translator) did a good job giving different tones and styles to the different perspectives. Unfortunately, though, trying to manage this sprawling narrative made things a little challenging, and that is where the book started to lose me. I also felt that the ending was very confusing. I actually read that others were also confused by the ending.
